Dear junebug58-- There are two sites that will give you advice on how to remove the radio from your 2001 Mazda Protege. First, try-- http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/cat/-13089/edOid/105531/rpem/ccd/lookLearn.do. I also like to use www.crutchfield.com. They have instructions, but they also have a toll-free phone number with experts answering the phone. Ask for Sparky and tell them I sent you. Good luck from Bovan.
