2nd Key fob programming

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Lost my fob for my 2018 chevy cruze push button start. New fob programmed
and now dash board says ready for transmitter 2. Never had a second
transmitter when I bought the car new. Disconnected the battery to remove
programming mode but didn't work. Every time I get in to drive I will have to
hold the start button for 12 seconds then step on the brake to start and drive.
Been told if I continue to do this it might decide one day to lock me out.
Nobody knows what to do. Chevy service dept. locksmith or mechanic. HELP

Ok, so you found out that you can't program a second fob and or key yourself. You need a minimum of two fobs to program a third yourself with the procedure. So at this point, with only one working fob, your going to have to visit a GM dealer to help you program the second. I would then also purchase a third one in case you lose one.

FYI: when buying a new or used vehicle, always make sure you get two fobs, keys or transmitter. Insist if they don't include it. You never know when you will lose one or have to program a third.

Thank you Mark for answering. I heard that was likely but wanted to be sure before spending another $260. It won't ask me for a third remote, will it? That was one of my concerns nobody was sure of. My owners manual says "You can program with two" rather than saying "You must" which would have been helpful but now I know.

TDolby, I was able to program the first one but couldn't get out of program mode unless I held the start button 12 seconds and then press the brake pedal and start as usual. Was worried how long I could go starting it that way. Thought it might decide to lock me out completely down the road, so to speak. LOL The dealership in Idaho where I bought the car only had one and didn't think I to insist on a second one. Especially since my son worked there. Any thoughts on how long I could go starting it with the 12 second step first? Also, do you trust buying fobs online? I would save $50. ??? I've successfully purchased the ford remote that way.

I've bought replacement fobs for my 2000 Grand Prix and my 2008 Grand Marquis, new, from Ebay with no problems. I already had one fob for the Grand Marquis but no fobs for the Grand Prix. When a vehicle is new it comes with two sets of keys and two fobs, where applicable. When you enter the program mode ALL fobs are cleared from the vehicle's memory. When I programmed my two new fobs to my Grand Prix the computer was satisfied because the car had two fobs when it was new. It expected two fobs and it got two fobs. With my Grand Marquis I had one fob already. So I programmed the new fob AND the old fob again. So the computer was satisfied with the two fobs. In your case the vehicle is expecting a second fob because it had two when it was new. To get rid of the message you need to buy a second fob, enter the program mode, and program BOTH fobs at the same time to the vehicle. Then the computer will be satisfied. Hope that helps! Jim
