I have a silverado that needs a new engine. Is engine replacement something that I can do myself? I have done tons of repairs on my car and husbands truck from breaks (pads, reservoirs, roters), radiator replacement, water pumps, alternators, and basic things like oil changes and sparkplugs. I feel I am pretty handy when it comes to repairs. If I know what is wrong and can take it off, I can definitely put a new one on. Love a challenge. I just want to make sure I'm not getting in over my head with the entire engine and not sure if there are special tools that I would need in addition to what I already have.

It is just nuts and bolts and wiring. It is a BIG job and can be dangerous due to the handling of the heavy engine. You will need a helper and a hoist to lift the engine out of the truck. Also need jacks and jack stands to hold the transmission in place. Not something I would try in my back yard and I used to own a garage.
