2001 Ford Focus 181,000 miles! Help please!

Asked by ErikaDisney Aug 15, 2016 at 09:58 AM about the 2000 Ford Focus SE Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

More recently, the  car started jerking when trying to go 55-60 mph, but we
got a new fuel filter and that seemed to fix the problem.  I know we need
new brakes, and we just got 4 new tires on the car and now the brakes
grind and there is a, almost, siren noise coming when accelerating from full
stop, and there is still jerking but now also loss of fuel to engine when trying
to accelerate through gears (symptoms not constantly) and I've noticed a
slight lack of fuel economy.  Please.  Need help.

Get the fuel pressure tested, you may have a dying fuel pump. Lack of fuel economy can be a number of things, car may be in need of a tune up. Grinding brakes, sounds like you need a brake job. At least check the condition of the pads/rotors. Siren-like noise, go through all the vacuum hoses/PCV/EGR/intake, you may have a vacuum leak or air intake restriction. You have a high-mileage car, it requires more care, at some point it will become a money pit that you'll have to kick to the curb.
