Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo that
continues to have issues with over heating. While
the vehicle is in transit there are no issues. If I
leave the vehicle idling or in heavy traffic the
vehicle begins to overheat until the vehicle begins
to travel at normal speed again. I've changed the
radiator twice, the cooling fan at least twice, the
water pump and the cooling sensor. Runs good for
a 3-6 months then the problem reoccurs. Help!!!!!

Check to see if your Aux cooling fan comes on when it gets hot. That was what cracked my head I think (Wife calls and asks what the check gages light means,??) Yep... i got a winner! Lol she sure dose look good for a 59 yo anyway. Lol Also, both my 95 and 2000 fan clutches went out at around 116000. Simple test. When cold and keys not in the ignition spin the fan as and if it keeps spinning or is real easy. The your fan clutch could be part of the problem. When u start troubleshooting older vehicles. U must understand that all of the components together could add up to a fault. If all are functioning close to specifications. The 95"s have a built in diagnostic. Cycle the key 3 times and leave it on . Look at the check gauges or engine light and it will flash 2 digit codes. Might help. Goodluck! Btw, I have had a lot of cars in my time,I am a firm believer that if ever had to walk home or get towed. Then I'm done! The moment u can't just get in and drive 200 miles and feel safe about your trip. It's time. To trade up. XJ'S are holding their value lately. Your probably start having cascading failures! I replaced my battery and started it up and it ran badly! After several from the hip shots and replacing nearly everything including the distributor. It still ran terribly. Turns out. Disconnecting the battery erases all the error codes as well as learned drivability information it uses to operate. So all the sensors have to relearn what optimum operating specifications are. And if u replaced as ll the sensors and one is bad( happens quite often. Pll swap out stuff and assume it's not the problem so they clean up theirs and take it back not knowing that most sensors are not even used until the engine gets warm and the feedback loops try to fix the issue but can't.. I'm a Navy Electronics Technician and have a brother with 30 thousand dollar snap on toolbox that he has to hire a wrecker to move. Once I check the fuel rail and spark. Points. Crank shaft position sensor. Rotor and timimg... and all's good. Antithieft is gonna get elevated to a position just past fuel and spark I think. Good luck all. Sometimes the little things can get u. Burned out dash lights are all tested when u turn the key on. Make sure ur not chasing your tail. ( BAD TEST LEAD WHIPPED ME ONCE) It HAPPENS. LOL L8TR
