I just bought a 2006 Yukon XL SLT and my diagnostic device says it has a "gross" emissions system leak. What is the best way to go about determining where the leak is at?

Asked by SilverFox67 Aug 16, 2017 at 06:31 PM about the 2006 GMC Yukon XL 1500 SLT-1 RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

There were no codes showing up through the DIC when I was checking out the vehicle, but three days after buying it the engine light came on. I connected my diagnostic reader and it shows I have a major emission system leak.

Search You-tube for how-to vids on finding emissions leaks or EVAP leaks. Most methods will involve the use of a shop vac and work fairly well as a cheap DIY test.

No codes on your diagnostic reader? Maybe the leak is in the EVAP system.

Make sure the gas cap is on and tight. #1 cause for that code. Be aware that once you set that code, you may have to use a scanner to reset it... Also, there is a diaphragm in the gas cap -- ethanol can ruin it -- you may need to replace the gas cap. Inexpensive and available at most autoparts stores...
