Does this sound like a transmission problem

Asked by jorgiegirl1964 Jan 11, 2014 at 10:32 PM about the 2004 GMC Envoy 4 Dr SLT SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was putting the car in reverse, but it wouldn't stay in any gear.  The gearshift would slide back and forth but not lock in.  I turned off the car to see if it would reset, and then it would not start back up.  Does this sound like I'm going to need to replace the transmission>

I think your shifter linkage ON the transmission is out of adjustment and needs adjusted. See if you can put it in neutral and start it.

tuff4x4 is going where i would have went. Before it broke do you think it shifted from park. Will the vehicle roll right know?? These have a cable runnning from the steering column down to the tranny to shift. The cable is bolted to the tranny and attached to the shift linkage on the drivers side of the tranny. The P-N safety switch is mounted to this shift linkage on the tranny. You need to roll under there and check this. The issue should be noticable if it is here (except for a internally broken cable). Try turning the shift linkage counter-clockwise (top forward) untill it stops this will be park. May need a tool for leverage. Try starting. If it starts shut off, put the shifter in park and re-attach the shifter.
