my 2004 gmc envoy 4x4 start well but after 4 minutes running the transmission or the transfer case dont let tha truck move

my 2002 envoy when I started up runs great Gozen girls okay as soon as I start driving it it drives but it don't seem to want a shift in drive it takes about 4 miles before a good shift into drive what the reason why the transmission or what why does it take for ever to go and drive
