Have you tried the Shift Lock release? Could be a bad sensor not thinking that you have the brake pedal depressed. https://www.kia-forums.com/threads/2011-kia-sportage-will-not-shift-to-drive.104546/

yes I tried that Nathan. It worked but I have to press that every time I drive. Also brake lights dont come on when pedal is pressed. I found a 10 A fuse burnt under the hood under Stop. I changed the switch under the brake pedal arm and the fuse blew again and shifter still stuck

Okay, you're definitely on the right track. There's a short somewhere in that brake pedal switch circuit. Any modifications to the car recently that may have introduced a problem? Otherwise it's just going to be a process of following that circuit until you find the short (I know that's not real helpful).

Thanks for helping Nathan! I took it to the dealer and this was their prognosis; I need part 938103k000 brake switch( i replaced that and changed that fuse=blown),392102g380 sensor ass, 589203w400 hydraulic abs module. What do you think of that?!

I would make sure they explain why you need the ABS module, as that will be pretty expensive. I wouldn't think it would be involved in the switch/fuse/circuit problem, but stranger things have happened.
