1965 mustang seems to be geared too low

Question type: General

My 1965 mustang has a C4 trans. and 3.1 axle. It just seems that the engine is running too fast while cruising down the road. I don't have a tachometer installed yet so don't know the rpm. I took the car to one transmission expert and he seemed to think the car is normal and "they just did that back then ". Maybe I'm just used to today's cars  with over drive and many gears in the transmission. Please comment . thanks walt

older cars had a modulator of some kind for the tranny , mopar had the kick down lever and gm used vacuum from the manifold , yours may have something similar , why the expert missed this I can't say , perhaps because it's old school stuff

My car DOES have a modulator valve that is activated by vacuum from the intake manifold. And I know it can be adjusted but I thought it just changed when the gears shifted and not the ratio of the top gear. Maybe I should consult another "expert". Thanks

Yes that's what I thought ----just controls the shift points. The shifting is basically Ok but I might tweak the modulator a bit to make it shift a little later. QUESTION: since you have a C4 what is your axle ratio and what is the rpm at say 50 mph ? Any comments will be helpful. thanks

Make sure it shifts into 3rd gear. Maybe it is stuck in 2nd.
