Jeep won't start

Asked by Rebecca Nov 12, 2018 at 05:55 PM about the 2013 Jeep Compass Latitude 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My jeep all of asudden stopped working. With no
warning. It would try to turn over but it wouldn't
turn over. My lights worked, inside lights. It
sounded like clicking I guess I don't know the
sound is hard to describe. I had to have it towed.
My mechanic said that it worked fine for him when
he got it off the tow truck. He did replace the
battery. He said it works I went to pick it up and it
was fine. I did notice that on the way home it would
rev forward like I hit the gas pedal fast. Then the
next day it wouldn't start. Mechanic thinks my car
has a problem with the automatic start. Any
thoughts?

I would agree with the mechanic that the five year old battery was ready to go. Replacing it was a good idea. A dying battery can light the lights but won't have enough power to crank and start the engine. Now about the power surging of the engine...after disconnecting the battery for replacement, the computer will loose some of it's memory and will have to "relearn" things like shift points and idle speed. That's why it surges. That stuff will be okay after a few drive cycles. I'm not sure why it wouldn't start the next. New battery defective? Needs a charge that driving did not do? Not sure.

Just a suggestion, always check out www.NHYSA.gov online. They list all current recalls for vehicles in the USA (even older vehicles) if there's a recall on yours (You'll need to type in your VIN number on that page to find out) then you can call any new car dealership that sells your make of vehicle and they can fix it free of charge. I've unfortunately had to do that on two occasoins with my 1997 Honda Accord. Take care.

Mine is currently doing the same thing. It's a 2015 compass. I recently had the battery changed and had the starter replaced. This morning I once again got the clicking noise. I shook the car some and Bam, it started. I'm at a lost of what to do about it.

I submitted my problem above here. The problem ended up being a corroded relay switch. It should have been a simple fix. If you are having problems similar to mine, take it to the dealership. It will save you more in the long run, rather than having a local mechanic guess what's wrong.

My mom’s 2018 Compass isn’t starting for the third time. Already had it towed, both the A&B batteries have been replaced. After the second time in the shop (Jeep dealership), now it turns off at red lights! WTH! It ran great for 2.5yrs never turned off at lights and never not started after sitting in the garage for 2-3 days before. Now if it’s parked for 2-3 days it won’t start, lights go on, the menu scrolls through the settings but the vehicle is immobilized. The 3yr warranty is up in a month, not sure what to do if the Jeep dealership says nothing is wrong w/it. Seems like it’s a lemon, or Jeep needs to do a massive recall. Perhaps get in on a class action lawsuit if anyone is thinking that route??? With all the same issues I’ve read online, this is unacceptable for a newer car.

OMG! I am having the same problem with my 2017 JEEP Compass. I bought it in 2018 and it drove fine until 3 weeks ago when I started having problems with it not starting. My mechanic found some loose wires on the starter and reconnected them. The car drove fine for almost a week. Because I am working from home, I don't drive the car everyday and one day passed without me driving it and the next day it wouldn't start or jump. Had to have it towed back to the mechanic who has it for 3 days now and still doesn't know what's wrong. SO FRUSTRATING!!

My very old Toyota Corolla had a Relay housing box underneath the engine hood, and the thing I noticed was the COVER of that box was so old it had cracked on the side, which means humidity from the air could definitely get into it. So, I imagine with changes in air temperature ESPECIALLY in coastal areas like where I am near the Chesapeake bay and Atlanic coast, going from a Warm day to a Frigid evening may cause condensation to form ANYWHERE on our vehicles. I am thankful most of my driving allows the car to Warm up nicely but, I had a Starting issue with my 2017 Jeep Compass yesterday twice. The 2nd time was when I hopped in and drove a SHORT distance to a local restaurant, went in, picked up food and came back out fairly quickly (5 to 7 minutes, max.) then she would not Start! Good grief! I waited a few minutes, even setting a 2 minute Timer on my smartphone so I would not "jump the gun" and try Starting it too quickly! The dashboard was lighting up and the 'Check Engine' (single) light was staying LIT UP more than simply from turning the key to the 'Accessory' ON position; with the next position being Start/Ignition. I waited 3 minutes and tried the Start 3 times, during which I could HEAR it sounded to be going a touch further each time! Anyhow, on the 3rd try, she started again and so only about 6 to 7 minutes was lost in 'putting up with' this annoying behavior. I will return here with more information if I learn anything, plus, the exact name AND number ID of the above mentioned corroded Relay after I identify it. Thanks to everyone!

I found some write-up mentioning the Auto Shutdown (ASD) Relay and this device ties into several key systems on my Jeep Compass (2017) and has 4 different fuses routing power to it! This throws up many Red flags for me, so I am either going to pay my local Jeep dealership or a specialty automotive electric shop to swap this ($25 to $35 dollar) part out tomorrow (March 22, '21). Will return again to let anyone watching this thread know IF this helps improve my Jeep's starting behavior.

Dealing with the same thing, but mine did toss up some codes before I took it to the mechanic....throttle body issues. Mechanic put new battery in, but then it wouldn't start. Duh...I told them the codes said throttle body. All my hours of online research says this can cause the jeep to not start. (2018 jeep compass - 44k miles)
