Is it my tramsmission? Subaru Outback 2013

Asked by Goggles3000 Oct 04, 2019 at 02:39 AM about the 2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Our regularly serviced OB started sounding
odd so I took it in. Even though nothing
shows up on diagnostic, they say we need a
new transmission to the tune of $8500. The
diagnosis is based on the mechanic’s
experience. They won’t say more than that.
This is worth as much as the car. Advice? Is it
likely the transmission?

Hen i run into things like this , start feeling like i might be takn i step back tell them u will be in touch . then i would ask around to find some old shade tree. Repair man that has been in a few or around a few . ask him ,i believe he will do everything cheaper do it with pride and. I dont believe the cost will get to or over 75to 100 dollars and im only guessing been way long time since i did this work . im on a Saturn Sl2 now . good luck i Pray all works out on cheap side . its that or insure up and burn it with bullett holes it it . stolen lol.

If it is the transmission, install a used one and then dump the car.

First gen CVTs are failing like bees approaching winter. Sometimes it's an inner noisy bearing that's simply annoying, or commonly the valve body screws up and causes stalling upon stopping. Ask Subaru to help with goodwill toward the valve body replacement if indicated. If it's an inner bearing I'd chase a used CVT for under $1k and spend $500 swapping it in, and KEEP this OB, as, although the headlights are a pita, 2013-2014 OBs and Legs are fine specimens that will enjoy a long lifespan. Value of a good '13 OB Prem is in the $10-12k range, so chasing the repair for $1.5k is prudent. No apparent reason to dump it that you've provided. F_O_R's just being less cheerful than I am this weekend.
