Leak on 2012 Ford F-150

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello, I just recently bought my Ford F-150, and just
noticed a small leak near the rear central part of the
truck. I couldn’t tell the color of the liquid, looks
clearish, but it does have a smell to it.

Only things back there that can leak are gas, brake fluid, and rear differential oil. Gas is the only one that is clear, but it's not always easy seeing what color a fluid is on the ground. You could put out some paper to catch the leak, you'll get a better idea of color and maybe where it's leaking from.

That is your rear differential and it looks like the gasket is leaking. A shop can replace the gasket and fluid for around 200 to 300, depending on where you live. If differential oil runs low and you keep driving, you can trash those gears, and that will be a much bigger expense to replace.

It appears the flange yoke seal may be leaking. It is located right behind where the drive shaft connects. Wind is blowing the grease backward as you drive toward the pumpkin where it drips off. Beyond your ability to repair but not a difficult repair for a shop. The repair will include new grease. The ford recommendation is now 75W140 full synthetic plus the additive is the rear end is limited slip. Don't know if you use your truck as a hauler or just a daily driver. If hued regularly to haul, change the grease ever 30K. If daily driver every 60K.
