2000 jeep Cherokee no bus error code

Asked by Carli Jul 06, 2018 at 10:59 PM about the 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4-Door RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I'm not a mechanic but my daughter's Jeep
wouldn't start had it towed home and started
researching problems saw that a common problem
was the crank sensor and I also saw that when the
no bus sign comes on it could also be the
connections for the the instrument cluster so I
took the instrument cluster off scraped the
connectors and cleaned it up and I still got the no
bus signal and then after that I was getting advice
from friends and everything and everyone agreed
that it was the crank sensor so I went under the car
and I replaced the crank sensor and I'm still getting
no start I'm still getting it's turning over but it's not
starting I am getting the no bus sign where the
odometer is at and I'm still getting nothing i I'm
stuck I don't know what to do if someone has any
more advice about this it would be greatly
appreciated thank you

2001 Jeep Cherokee 75K same story .....I gave up took it to a mechanic who after poking around for a day thinks it might have been a fuse for ignition that doesn't look bad on the fuse block passenger side kick plate. BUT it is not definitive as the jeep would start once in a while before the fuse was replaced. So I am on a short leash for now. So if there is anyone else out there who has this story but a definite culprit please post!

It was a fuse. Starts and runs great but just got the no bus again as I drove home. Stopped and restarted Jeep and panel was back up and running. Checked for codes when I gone home and no codes triggered. I’ve replaced everything but the wiring harness. Guess what’s next.....

Question: I just noticed the "no bus" light in the odometer, but mine was running fine. The speedometer was out and the check engine light and the airbag light were on. Thoughts?

I had a crank no start on my 2000 xj. Replaced crank sensor still nothing pulled out the cam sensor and synchronizer to find the gear was all chewed up. Replaced that along with a new coil pack and she runs again but NOW i am getting no bus on the cluster and finicky gauges

2000 Jeep Cherokee. I get this problem every once in a while. Has nothing to do with anything in the previous answers. My Jeep runs & starts perfect. When i get this code my gas gauge stops working. So i stop the car and restart it. Then I turn the left & right turn signal off & on. This clears the error message and everything works again. I believe it has something to do with a bad stop light or turn light bulb going bad. Hope this helps someone.

There is a braided ground that runs from the firewall on the drivers side to the back of the block and connects to the back righ head bolt. The can rust out and stop carrying ground to the cluster. It’s the main cluster ground. Cleaned where it connected and reconnected started right up. After 25 hours of trying everything else. Only ground I didn’t check. It is located 5 inches down from the cowl on the drivers side. Right in the middle.

A trick to clear the gauge issue in my 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport is to hold the TRIP Counter button while turning the key to crank it. :)

I get the NO BUS, and unresponsive tach/speedometer on my 2001 xj whenever the gas light comes on. Im wondering if the new LED lights I put in the dash cluster are causing this to happen, and whether some bad bulb connections could be the cause on other jeeps.

I had this issue a few years ago, I think it was a fuse or something else simple. Today, I just finished changing the coils, spark plugs, fuel injectors and installing a heat shield on the fuel rail (heat soak repairs) and that damn "No Bus" came back. This is my first stop before checking the fuses. It runs great BTW, no studder with the new injectors. 2000, Jeep Cherokee Cali Emissions

I dont know if it just needed time after connecting the battery or if the odometer press and hold while starting did the trick. Now onto cutting the hood vents.

The problem went away? @Aaron please let us know if It comes back. I put a new ECM on mine and the problem was resolved for 6 months and now is back again.

Ok y'all I'm having the same problem from my 2000 Cherokee 4.0L inline 6. When it first happened a well ago I replaced the crankshaft position sensor and it ran for a day and a half. Then I replaced the ignition coil rail, spark plugs, alternator, cleaned the connections on the cluster, and cleaned the fuel injectors and fuel rail. That night it ran like a new one with no issues. The next morning it wouldn't crank again with the same no bus error and no gauges. Since then I've cleaned all the grounds, replaced the ECU/PCM, checked all the fuses and even replaced the crankshaft position sensor again but nothing has fixed it. Anyone got a solution that works? Thanks.

My girlfriends jeep has the same issue. We cleaned the grounds. and the ecu. all connections on the cluster. we took the dash apart twice. the jeep will start but we just get no lights no gauges. and we also get a check engine light. Anything else? We don’t think it’s any of fuses we tested them but we’re still not sure and we also replaced the battery.

Check the ground from your engine block to the firewall. Often gets rusty and causes intermittent problems

That’s exactly what was wrong with mine. The nut was loose. Cleaned it and retightened it. Fired right up. Same issues. No bus. No gauges. No turn over.
