bad brake light switch

can a broken brake light switch cause them not to come? i know it causes them
usually to stay on?

Yes. It depends in the state it was when it broke. If contacts were in closed or open position. Check fuses first and lightbulbs, if everything is ok, test the switch by disconnecting the switch and jumpering the contacts before buying a new switch. If they still don't work, check wiring harness.
