If you don't trust the guy take it to another shop, let them diagnose the problem, then go with whoever you like. When it comes to AC, like transmissions, go with a shop that specializes in those.

If it has a bad bearing, you tend to notice a pulley going bad. Put a socket on the tensioner and loosen the serpentine belt, then spin the pulley by hand and feel for any play. It could just be a bad pulley with the compressor still being good but those are usually sold as a unit, most places won't bother trying to replace just a pulley on the AC. A shop that caters to AC repairs might set you straight on just what needs to be repaired.
