2012 Mazda 5 Spongy Brake Pedal

Asked by GuruD5B8C9 Jan 28, 2024 at 08:05 PM about the 2012 Mazda MAZDA5 Touring

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This car has had a "Spongy" Brake Pedal for some time now. I've bled the
brakes several times and the issue has not improved. Recently I replaced the
master cylinder and bleed all the calipers still with no help. With the car not
running the pedal feels good but once it's started the sponginess returns.
During by last bleeding process, I noticed that the calipers were slow to react
to pedal pressure. When my helper told me that the pedal was stiff the
calipers still had not grabbed the rotor until about 10-15 seconds after. This
occurred at all 4 locations. Can this be an issue with the ABS module, or do I
have another component that is causing this restriction in the system?

Sounds like an ABS issue, you may need a scan tool with ABS activation software to bleed the brakes properly if the system is operational. Or you could have a bad ABS unit.

Why don't you, or why didn't you long ago, take the car to a mechanic to diagnose. At least then you'd know what the problem actually is. From here, I can only tell you what the most likely problems would be based on your description. Yes, maybe it's an ABS problem.

G A - Thanks for your input. I'm able to barrow a scan tool that should be able to activate the ABS module. Hopefully I'll be able to get it working again without having to replace the ABS Module. Ed92626 - It's not my vehicle and I was just recently informed about how long the issue has been going on. Has far as taking it to a shop to get diagnosed comes down to money and I thought it would just be a bleeding issue. After what I found during the bleeding process, I was thinking it could possibly be an ABS problem and just wanted a second opinion from others that have seen this before. Thank you both for your input.

I have the same issue, I replaced the master cylinder and replace the front brake pads since it was a little wasted, and the brake pedal still goes all the way down. It brakes well, I have no issue with that.
