What could cause an oil filter failure?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The 15K service was recently performed on my car.  On a recent drive the oil
pressure symbol lit up and stayed on.  I drove home (less than 30 miles) and
parked the car.  Suddenly there was a gush of oil (about 3 qts) on the ground.
Oil filter was replaced, and oil topped off.  A few days later, in a shopping
center parking lot, when I started the car, the symbol lit up again.  There was
a small puddle of oil under the car.  I had the car flat bedded home, where it
now sits waiting for an answer to this question.  Much thanks for a prompt
reply.

Why do you think the filter failed? Driving 30 miles with the oil pressure warning light on was really dumb. You may have ruined the engine.

Do you know for sure it's the oil filter? It could be the oil drain plug or even cooling lines for an external engine oil cooler, if equipped. Who did the oil change? If it was a chain type of place like Jiffy Lube, Walmart, or the local car wash I'd be very suspicious of their work. Yes, there's a car wash place near me that "repairs" vehicles too! Hope that helps! Jim

The mechanic may be liable for a new engine. If the filter actually burst the manufacturer may be liable.
