Squeaky Driving

Asked by GuruC2M1Y Mar 06, 2019 at 01:16 AM about the 2011 Ford Fusion SEL V6 AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2011 Ford Fusion sport v6 awd. It has started making a squeaking
sound when turning the wheel or driving over bumps (the front passenger
side seems worse). What could this be?

It could be something as simple as a sway bar link. There's one on each side of the front sway bar, and they cost less than $20 apiece typically. A strut might also squeak, but more often makes additional noises like clunking.

Ok thank you. That's hopefully what it is. Do you think leaving it is causing damage to the car or should I get it fixed right away?

Probably lower ball joints. If it’s squeaking in turns as you turn the wheel. Even if it’s in park then it’s a ball joint. If it squeaks only when it’s in drive. Check your CV axels. I’ve had a 99’ Honda Accord with the same problem before. Most likely Lower ball joints or CV axels. Unlikely it’s a sway bar link. But check that too if you can.

We can't say for certain that's what's causing the squeaking. It might be a brake caliper, which makes it a higher priority to fix than something like a sway bar link. Most often a squeak can come from something that has bushings on it, which squeak when they wear down, and are not often super high priority to fix right away. Take a walk around the car, pushing up and down on it with all your weight. Can you hear the squeak then? If so then it's likely from a strut or sway bar. Call around to local shops and ask what they charge to replace a set of squeaky sway bar links. Then when you get there, ask them to verify that was the source of the noise.
