Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2010 Jeep Wrangler.  Start/Stalls happen intermittently.  Restart takes 4-8 attempts before engine will run normally.  Occasionally stalls at intersections when engine has returned to idle.  Recent start/stall, followed by multiple attempts to start, then turn key, everything lights up - but starter does not engage.  Towed to shop where it then started normally.  Frustrating as all get out.  Anybody got an idea?

Put in the new sensor last night. Will have to wait and see if the problem occurs again. If not, I believe we can assume the sensor was the problem. I will post an update if the problem persists, or an update in 3 months if it has not reoccurred. Best wishes, and thank you for the timely response.

Changed the transmission position sensor. Seemed to do the job, but about 30 days ether problem returned. After researching more, I found a YouTube video of someone who had the same problem. It turned out to be the security system had lost the programming for one of the two keys we owned. Because ithe car doesn’t sense a valid key, it shuts the engine down. To check it this is your problem also, put key in ignition, turn to rn position (all dash sensors on) but do not turn to start. You will notice a small red light on the right side of the instrument cluster. It will go out. If it comes back on and flashes, it is not sensing your key. If it stays off, turn the starter over and car will run. If that’s what you experience, try your spare key. Or visit your dealer to reprogram. Hope that helps.
