2009 Outback Engine Knock Diagnostic

My 2009 Subaru Outback has what I think is rod knock (knocks on deceleration
when cold or hot), and I don't want to spend a lot of money diagnosing etc. if
I'm just going to end up buying a replacement vehicle. What's the most cost
effective way to verify if the engine is essentially dying or not?
