I took my 2009 buick out of town and as we were
going on the odometer it said transmission hot idle
engine we pulled over let it cooled out and it was
good. But the next day as we were driving it
wouldn't shift to 2nd gear or go pass 40.

Sounds like it is Limp Mode. Have tranny fluid checked/replaced along with filter.
