2008 kia rio smoking from under hood

Asked by Navara_842 Jan 14, 2017 at 04:56 PM about the 2008 Kia Rio Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok 2008 kia Rio is smoking from under the hood
and out into the cab if the car. But just when
starting and then it clears. Also will not go above
like 20 or 30 miles an hour. We just replaced the
catalect converter, the ignition coils and spark
plugs. We got the codes read at the auto store.
One says multiple misfires. One says system to
rich and two say that 2 and 4 are not firing at all.
I'm trying tie avoid going to a mechanic if I can do
the work with my husband but we are stumped
right now. Help please.

"Any, some or all of a hundred different causes for your problem" Having similar problems myself. I hope you got it fixed, I'd be very interested in what is wrong. For me, it started with rough running, replaced spark plugs, no effect. Replaced coil, same code. Moved the misfiring coil to an new position misfire remained and a new different cyl started misfiring. Tried a whole new coil loom, no effect. Lots of back pressure, found the undercar CAT clogged. Knocked the CAT clear out = no effect. I've cleaned out the throttle body, soaked the fuel injectors in cleaner, wont start. There is an idle sensor bolted on to the throttle body that gets blocked up with road soot, took that off and cleaned it.

Also, did you replace which CAT? the one attached to the manifold or the one under the car? If the manifold cat is failing it could plug your new CAT under the car.
