Difficult start when front lower than back

Asked by Bigtenor62 Apr 05, 2020 at 10:32 AM about the 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis LSE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis is a fantastic
car. About a year ago I noticed that if I don’t
park with the front end higher than the back it
might take 2 or 3 cranks to start. Otherwise it
starts every time on the first crank. We
replaced the fuel filter, replaced 1 spark plug
and plug wire. Still does it. No codes come
up. What could be the problem? Should I go
ahead and replace the other spark plugs and
wires as well?

I'm thinking maybe the pickup screen in your gas tank is clogged. How much gas is in it when this happens? You may have to drop the tank, clean it out, and clean the take-up screen on the fuel pump. The other thing could be a defective vent system, try it with the gas cap loose to see if that makes a difference, and listen for a whoosh when you take off the cap. The fuel pump froze up completely on my 2002, had to replace it, costly, but it wouldn't run at all.

Maybe the tank fuel pump pickup screen is plugged. You may have to remove the tank, and clean it out. Also check the venting. try starting it with the fuel cap lose. I don't think it's the wires.
