1995 Mercury Grand Marquis has no sound when trying to start.

Asked by truckerdog May 25, 2014 at 06:52 PM about the 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We replaced the battery and the
positive batt terminal on the
cable as we had this prob before
and it was the neg terminal bad.
Cleaned everything including the
ground to the body. Everything
lights up when key is turned but
no clicking sound, nothing. Any
suggestions of cheap fixes to
start with? The car sat for
several months but was starting
fine before we went on the road
a few months (truck driver).

Ok this going to sound weird. But had a car the other day that was acting like dead battery. Same symptoms as yours but I knew for a fact all the battery, cables, grounds and starter was perfect. Fought with it for two days. For giggles I loosened the tilt steering wheel raised It up then lowered and locked it back in normal position. WAM. It fired right up. I tried for two more days to get it to not start like it had been doing but it never did it again. Probably not your issue but something you might want to try just for giggles.

@Dandyoun - awesome! I haven't seen that failure in years! The Pot Metal Ignition switch comes apart usually. I would use a test light to see if there's power going to the solenoid when cranking as well as hold the key in the crank position while moving the gear selector around in Park and Neutral. I would also look under the dash near the steering column for a "Shade Tree" alarm install that interrupts the "Cranking" circuit.

start with the simple before looking for the obscure, CHECK THE SOLENOID FIRST

Yes it had me. Was only getting .5 volts to solenoid wire on starter. Still not sure what was causing it but knock on wood been doing great since then. But we all know that the problem will show its head again and at least now I know to start with the steering column on this one.
