The only thing you can do is keep the car tuned up and properly inflate the tires. I put in 2 more lbs. in my tires. But all this will get you is your MPG will not get any worse, and you won't notice any real difference. Sorry. So you have to decide, no car payment and low MPG vs better MPG and car payment ? Good Luck!, Run the numbers and see? My '87 5.O gets 18 MPG doing a combinations highway and city.

How many miles do you drive a month? ex. 1000 miles per month, at 18 MPG. So that's 55 gals. @ 3.50 a gallon = $192.50 in gas. Say new car gets 35mpg. for the same miles, that's 28 gals @ the same $3.50 a gal. = $98 a month. So you will save approx. $95 a month less in gas with a more fuel efficent car. But if your new car payment is $300 a month, vs no car payment, it doesn't pay. In the long run it might work out, but I'd drive the Mustang until you have other costly repairs or it becomes unsafe, and or you just don't want to drive it anymore. HTH's!

thanks i could never have figured that out myself!!! good thing to think about. i know a 1986 car was made to last more than the cars made today are. but sometimes i do feel like i stuck in the 80's when driving it and think it would be nice to get some of the newer features plus the better gas mileage. thanks for all your help!

Opening up the air, k&n airfilter system and opening the exhaust does help with fuel economy and helps with performance. Good maitenence, tune ups, and preium fuel will help. The higher octane with the will also lengthen the motors life. Hope that helps.
