2006 Subaru stalls out

Asked by richgeorgia1 Jul 14, 2020 at 09:09 PM about the 2006 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited Wagon AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my 2006 Subaru outback every 500 or so miles looses power and the check
engine light and the cruse control light blinks the car does not turn off but only
runs at about 5mph . If i turn the car off and open the gas cap then replace it
and restart the car it  runs fine for several hundred more miles? I read some
place that if was the gas cap so I replaced it but it just failed agi, we to a fair
amount of traveling so i need to resolve this car only has 80k miles on it.

I suggest getting the codes read at your local parts store. There are too many things it could be to spend a lot of money guessing on .

Hmmm...that would throw a PO420 code...but usually NOT cause stalling. Let's add a dirty throttle body as it's been FOURTEEN years since degunking?!

I can agree with you there clean MAF sensor and Throttle body works wonders. The title says stalling but in the text it only says reduced power nothing about stalling .

I just had the codes checked and it came back as P2138 & P0457. After watching a lot of videos I believe it is the Evaporative system canister drain check valve, this started after getting gas last year as well as when the tank is below 1/2. As I stated this only happens every 500 to 1,000 mi.if you turn the car off and remove and replace the gas car all is fine until next time. Any other advice would be greatly welcomed..

update i changed out the charcoal canister and check valve , the issue still exists ! After additional investigation it turns out this is a ongoing issue for older Subaru's ! The gas peddle position sensor has a history of issues i'm currently in the process of replacing it if the issue reoccurs i will update this feed. Seems that a lot of subura's from 2000 thru 2006 can have this issue after 06 this was redesigned but no recall ever issued!!!

Mine (06) had that problem and a new pedal fixed the problem for me . I also cleaned the Throttle body and the MAF sensor.
