The gear shift knob for my 5-speed keeps popping off.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The first time it came off I was shifting from 1st to 2nd turning through an intersection.  Dangerous moment.  I have been able to pound it back in place with the base of my palm but it doesn't seem secure since it eventually pops off again.  I don't want to use a rubber mallet since I thought I might do more damage.  Anyone else discover this problem?

This happened to me a few times too....just take it to the dealer and have them put it back on properly.

Let the dealer take care of it and burn of a lot of money for something that is not very difficult thing to fix you'r self . Go to a car part dealer and buy a replacement knob... or you kan still use the original... the use rubber mallet that is the best fit and secure it with the following thightening ring

I did try the mallet and it didn't stay. Apparently the spring inside which returns the "plastic reverse donut" to the down position can overcome the tightness of the knob and shoot it into the air. Replacement knob is about $175 from what I've seen. I may have to go that route.

thats way bad... last alternate option is to go to a car salvage yard and see if they have one in their storage :)

reverse will still work if you take away the spring, bang the gear knob on and away you go. worked for me
