Asked by Christina Oct 22, 2008 at 10:01 AM about the 2000 Saab 9-3 SE

Question type: General

When did GM take over Saab production? What year? I have a 2000 model and I think it's a true Saab automobile...Am I right?

GM bought majority control in March 1990, and purchased the remaining 50% of the company in 2000...

Sorry Adelle, but you're driving a GM derived platform, However it is very far removed from its Vectra sibling. And if someone in an Audi tries to pull your leg about your Saab just being a Vauxhall, just tell them they're only driving a Skoda in drag.

I know this answer is a bit late, but they were still built in Sweden. GM owning the company doesn't necessarily mean much. From what I have researched, the owners of Saab/makers of the car stuck by them despite ownership and they are very picky about their vehicles - which is probably partly the reason they split, not to mention the fact that GM was about to go under itself. They probably felt that Saab was wasting them money wanting to make their cars a particular way. That's my two cents - check top gear, they talk about it. And have never said they are bad cars because of it.
