Question type: Car Customization

My 97 k1500 won't go into first, it's a
automatic and when I try to drive it, it
starts In 2nd and cycles through the
gears, but it won't start in 1st.
Anyone know what's wrong?

Is 4th gear gone? If so it's just a shift solenoid. There are 2 of them. When 1 goes out you lose 1st and 4th. Get to highway speed in OD the shift to D and see if it downshifts

Ok I'll try that, if that's the case do you know about how much it cost?

I believe the solenoid is about $40. To get to it all you have to do is drop the transmission pan. So 5 quarts of fluid and a trans filter and gasket. You would have to ask around for labor quotes but it shouldn't be more than a trans filter change.

My speedometer and rpm gauges also stoped working the same time as I lost first and 4th gear, is that the same problem? Sorry I forgot to mention that

Hmmm. That's odd that both would die. I know if the speedo stops and the trans acts up then the speed sensor is likely. But the tach isn't controled by that. So you did lose 4th?

What was the actual fix? I have a 95 C2500 that will go into drive but won't shift into any gear. Changed the trans filter and still nothing.

I happened to mess with the fuses on my 02 tahoe amd wouldn't go into first. I had put a bad 10amp fuse on one of the ignition fuses and cause it to shift funny. I went to a shop and they wanted to change my tranny. I said the hell with it so i went home and did what i did to it before. I eventually changed the bad fuse i had put and wala! Shift like new. Try your fuses before you do anything expensive.

Try just bearly stepping on the brake... then put it in first... and not so hard that you activate the calipers, just far enough to say your stepping on them... and see if that works as a temp fix to your problems

Hello Shane, Did you get it fixed? I have the exact same problem with 1st and 4th gear, plus my speedometer and rpm gauges also stoped working the same time as I lost 1st and 4th gear.
