Fuel gauge is operated by a float on the sending unit in the gas tank, called a potentiometer. Either the float is mechanically broken on the wire from the sending unit to the gauge is bad or the gauge itself. Most likely the float itself is bad

So can I just purchase a new float or do I need to purchase a whole new fuel pump that has the float already assembled.
