2007 Subaru Outback Converters?

Asked by BigRed409 Sep 09, 2019 at 10:56 AM about the 2007 Subaru Outback 2.5i Basic Wagon AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

How many catalytic converters does my '07 Outback have? The only O2
sensors I see, and have replaced, are on either side of the small converter in
the front exhaust manifold/ pipes.I have been fighting the check engine light
for about 8 months. Replaced both O2 sensors, gas cap,
EGR valve, and now the front converter/manifold pipes.  Still waiting for the
check engine light to go off. My engine has had the head gaskets replaced,
so coolant contamination should not be an issue. Is there another converter
in the next pipe downstream? With no O2 sensors either side of it, I see no
reason to replace it. No emissions testing where I live. Frustrating part is, I'm
6'4", and NEED the cruise control for longer trips. The darn CEL being on,
disables the cruise! Very frustrating. Is there a way to power up the cruise
with a jumper wire??

I have read the trouble codes several times. Usually code 0420, cat system inefficiciency. Replaces front O2 sensor, didn't help, then replaced rear, light stayed off for a couple of weeks. then it came back on. Off and on, it would code EGR, so I finally replaced that. Again, light stayed off for a couple weeks, then came back on. Car runs perfect all this time. Read code 0400 also, off and on. Changed gas cap to a new Genuine Subaru one. Didn't help. Good Lord, 4 or 5 cats, a person could go broke changing all those. I don't see how changing any of the rear ones, without an O2 sensor on either side of it, would talk to the computer in any way. Unless I'm missing something. Very frustrated with Suabru disabling the cruise!!!!! When Check engine light is on.

I was getting the same kind of codes and shutting down the cruise control . . I finally took matters into my own head and did a diagnostic tree. One I cleaned the maf sensor. next I cleaned the throttle body. then I replaced the accelerator pedal. . each of these caused a temporary stop to the problem. then i started getting cat codes for low efficiency. BINGO it hit me I changed the spark plugs and a new set of wires and just for good measure the coil. . No more codes and it has been a month. I would recommend the plugs and wires first. Make sure you get the right kind for your car (NGK) and gap them correctly . Mine were not gapped correctly that I took out. Reminder to self always check and do the easiest thing first. .
