My car went into fail safe mode and will not start but will turn over

My fail safe mode disappeared when I stopped using the cruice-control. I.e. switching off with the switch on the consolle.
I am having simlar problem with my 98 xj8 but when I put it in neutral she start and runs fine cant figure out I am going to try shuting off the cruise control button think I left on. I just did chnage the battery dont know if that is cause the problem either.
Never had Fail safe mode after I stopped using the cruise-control half a year ago
i shut it off still having problem I was told by someone yesturday to try resetting the computer by disconecting the battery and holding the cables together for 3o sec. this descharges all the compasitors in the computers will let you know if that works
jag computer a weird what u need to do it pull the cruise-control out then restart ur computer by doing the battery thing but this time let it sit for about 30 mins and make sure there no energy in the system then reconnect the battery but dont put the fuse back that helped me
