How do I check if the fuel filter or the fuel pump is bad ?

Died wont start .. it will crank with starting fluid... then dies.. sounds like its starved for
gas...

You need to have a fuel pump pressure test done. Mechanic removes fuel line and connects a fuel pump pressure tester to line then turns on vehicle so that fuel pump will work testing pressure.
