What scanner is recommended to read tranny codes on a 07 escape 3.0l auto?

My O/D light will flash after a few hard shifts (mostly from 1st to 2nd). I was told that
2nd gear could possibly be out of sync, and I have noticed 4th could also be out of
sync due to the high rpms when at 60 mph+. I was wondering what scanner besides a
Snap-on ETHOS (Which I can't afford) would be able to read any possible codes. Also I
swear I hear a vacuum leak when accelerating, but when I sprayed ether on every
vacuum line/ around the intake and manifold, the RPMS didn't increase above idle. Any
suggestions?

Get in your escape put it in neutral and turn on the key forward. watch for the light flashing. count the flashes and pauses. there will be a code it flashes to you. what is the code its telling you?
