Ford Escape XLT 3.0L 4x4 auto

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello, I have a 2002 Ford Escape XLT 3.0L 4x4 automatic that runs and
drives just great. 153K miles on it. Except for the transmission that will go
into 1st and 2nd, and reverse, it runs normal. But put it in Drive, and it's like it
won't go, slipping. I've scanned with an Actron CP9680 Autoscanner Plus,
and got no codes, no trans codes. So I'm wondering, will Ford be able to
scan something I can't if I take it there, or is this just an indicator that the
trans is toast? If it's a module, I could replace it, but there are no codes. So I
am stumped. I am not convinced it is the tranny quite yet, could it be the
trans control module, and how do i verify this before going to the dealer?
Thanks so much.

First off, I would not go to the dealer. Too much Money. Try a decent local transmission shop or good mechanic in your area. Second, the trans in your vehicle requires frequent fluid changes over the course of time. If not, it will fail prematurely. Slipping is always a sign of worn clutches and when this happens it's time to replace and or rebuild. Considering on how old the vehicle is and how much it is worth, almost nothing, I would tend to rebuild, the current one vs a new trans if you really love the vehicle. If not, time to let it go.
