2007 Santa Fe diesel just quits when tank below 1/4 full

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2007 Santa Fe diesel that will completely shut down when the fuel tank
is just under 1/4 tank.  I had fuel pump replaced and one fuel gauge sensor.
When I add 2 gallons of diesel it starts right up and runs fine.  Is there a 2nd
fuel tank sensor that shuts it down?

Everything is right there with the fuel pump assembly. Was the fuel tank checked for contamination when the pump assembly was out? When fuel is added just the movement can stir the contaminants around and away from the pump pickup, when the fuel level gets low the contaminants start moving towards the lower part of the fuel tank where the pump sits and blocks the pick up. Once the engine dies and the pump stops the contamination drops off and you add more fuel stirring then around again until the next time the fuel get low. I’ve seen this happen a couple of times especially with diesels.

Sounds like you got the wrong fuel pump. If you have a larger tank option the pick up tube on the new fuel pump is probably be too short . So when you get down to the quarter tank mark the tube is no longer submerged in the fuel. The other possibility is the fuel gauge sending unit, also part of the fuel pump assembly, is defective so your fuel gauge is not showing empty when it really is. Hope that helps! Jim
