1998 Cavalier will not pick up speed when you press the gas. It idles good.

The car starts and idles good.  But when you put it in 1st it will not get enough speed to get it into 2nd gear.

If the TPS was that bad I doubt the engine would stay running. Jerry is most likely correct. Pull your upstream oxygen sensor and see if that helps. Does the engine do anything when you hit the gas? If not it may be a throttle cable.

Possibilities: Bad cat.. Clogged fuel filter.. Failing fuel pump.. Just to name a few.. When was the last time the fuel filter was changed?
