misfire on cylinder 3

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Check engine light came on couple months ago
stated was time to change spark plugs and coil
packs. Was able to do front 3 with coil packs. But
they looked perfectly fine. Had to wait about 2
weeks later before I could get to the back 3 and
check engine light came on again and it also
started to sputter when driving. I had the code read
before I changed them. This time it was reading
misfire on cylinder 3. So we changed the back 3
and coil packs. But it is still sputtering and reading
misfire on 3. Also a little gas smell when I turn the
heater on. The one service man said he suggests
installing new fuel injectors. That should do the
trick he says. So I did the fuel injector for the
cylinder 3 that was misfiringredients and it seems
to still be sputtering. What am I missing.

What is the trouble code? It could be a bad manifold gasket causing a vacuum leak at number 3 or it could be other issues. How many miles on this Mazda?

Code is P0303 cylinder 3 misfire detected. Which I am having a hard time understanding. It was saying it before we changed that one (it happens it be one under the manifold) so it shouldn't be acting up now with new ones. That is when they suggested it was the fuel injector so we just changed that. Miles are 89,480

If it were mine I probably would have replaced the same parts you did or at least moved them around to see if the miss moved with the parts. Now I would get some carb cleaner spray and spray it around the intake manifold gasket to see if the engine changes idle speed. This might indicate a vacuum leak at the number 3 intake port causing the engine to miss-fire on the #3 cylinder due to a lean condition. If I had no results with the vacuum leak test I would run a compression test to see if #3 had a burned valve or perhaps a broken valve spring. It is possible the problem is electrical with an issue with the wiring to the number 3 injector or the coil also. Keep us posted as to what you find.
