Problems after battery change

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Recently tried to start my ‘06 MB CLK350 Cabrio and the ignition key cylinder
would not turn. Locks would not work. No lights. Called my MB repair shop
and they said my car’s battery was dead. No problem, I took out the battery
and went to a local auto parts store, battery tested dead, it was an MB
battery, but don’t know if it was the original. Probably not, 13 years old!
Purchased a store brand battery and I installed it, I am sure correctly, I am
reasonably mechanical. Double checked my work, and car started right up, I
think “OK great!”. Buttoned everything up and took the car for a short drive.
Car didn’t feel like it was shifting right, and within about three miles got a
check engine light ( never had one before) and soon got an ESP light, and
“visit workshop”. Car began to run rough and went to what I think was “limp
home mode”. Got it back in the driveway and shut it off.
I have restarted car once, sounds like it’s not hitting on all six cylinders, got
another ESP light, check engine still on. Car has always ran fine until this
battery change-out, so I am inclined to think the problem has to be an
electronic glitch related to the battery swap. ECM? Is there a code that has to
be flashed after a battery swap? My Mercedes shop is 60 miles away, very
competent but very expensive, so I thought I would try this forum before I put
my car on a trailer and take it to the shop.
Does anyone know what is wrong with my Mercedes?

Alternator may not but putting out enough current/volts. If you have a meter get some readings. If the electrical system on these cars has voltage drops or no steady voltage to the ECU it will run horrible. As far as the code question goes that should not be needed. I would however check for any pending codes once you verify the condition of the alternator. Good Luck!

Thank you Brian, that sounds very plausible, will have the alternator tested. Just wonder why this problem popped up immediately after the battery swap? I appreciate your reply! I will re-post with the results.

If your battery was weak and was not taking a charge the alternator would have to work harder and may have just called it quits. Kinda like if you had to walk a block every day then all of a sudden you were forced to run 10 miles. Hope that makes sense.

That makes sense, haven’t checked alternator yet, but will let you know the results. Thanks again for your help!
