Transmission won't shift gears.

Asked by Angela Jul 26, 2017 at 06:12 PM about the 1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class CLK 320 Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 99 Mercedes CLK 320. It was low on
transmission fluid, which I did not know. But when I
took it to my machinic he checked it and added
fluid. It drove for about a week after with no
problems. Then it just stopped Changi g gears
altogether. It will reverse and go in drive. But
absolutely won't switch gears. Does anyone have
any solutions? It even has my machinic stumped
and he doesn't want me to buy another
transmission if I don't have to.
PLEASE HELP!!

The transmissions will not shift gears IF your fluid is low as a safety device to protect your transmission. I'm not sure, but it may need a reset if it did run low. Was there any evidence of a drip or leak? You should notice it if you park in the same spot like your garage. If there is evidence of leakage, clean it up. Put some regular motor oil and it should clean up the transmission fluid. Then using cat litter, clean up the motor oil. Check the floor after parking it there a few days. If there is new oil drippings, you have some issues and may be low on fluid again. Have your mechanic check if there is a reset or something that needs to be set after you had run it with low fluid. My wife accidentally knocked the transmission into low gear and drove it a few miles on the freeway in low. She noticed the RPMs were very high and the speed was only 50. She pulled off and called. I had her start the car, put it in gear and made sure the indicator was showing "D" on the dash. She then drove home without any problem, but later the next day, the transmission dumped all the fluid on our floor. I had the bottom pulled and changed filters, flushed the trans, and new fluids and gaskets put in. No problems after 20K miles.
