My sister ran my truck to empty it didn't
run out of gas but ever since then the
engine light has been on

Since the Check engine light is on, an OBDII trouble code is stored in the cars system. A good place to start would be to scan for the trouble codes. Any auto part store can scan the truck, or borrow one from a friend. They aren't all that expensive nowadays.
