Swapped a 89 5.0 into my 96 f250 that had a 351

Asked by Guru95331G Jan 20, 2021 at 09:05 PM about the 1996 Ford F-250 2 Dr XLT Standard Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I pulled a 302 5.0 motor and trans out of a 89 ford
f150 and put it in my 96 f250 that had the 351.
Motor went bad and got the f150 basically for free.
Everything is hooked up in my truck. Not it was
very easy had to get a starter for a 96 ford 5.0, and
then had to get a distributor for a 96 so it would
plug up because I am using my 351 wiring
harness. I have everything bolted down and just
trying to get it to start now. For some reason I'm
not getting any spark. It's a brand new distributor
and ignition coil was replaced, but I don't really
know what else to check! Could I have out the
distributor back in wrong? Or could the wires be
hooked up wrong? Im not getting any spark.

The 351 is not a larger version of the 302. I think you need the 302 distributor, wiring and ignition module.

You also have the problem that the old motor is not OBD2 like your truck is.

I have a 302 distributor and ignition module on it. I had to buy a 96 302 distributor so it would plug into my harness. The 351 distributor was to big

On Board Diagnostics 2. The previous version was OBD1 which is not compatible. I suspect your mix and match of engines and parts are the issue.
