97 F250

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was driving down the road and my truck
shut of as if it ran out of gas. I had just put
15 gallons in the tank. The fuel pump and
filter are less than 1 year old. When I switch
to rear tank it fires right up. Any suggestions
on what to check other than fuel pump
(hoping its not the new pump already). It has
the 351 engine

Sounds like it might be the fuel pump... Can you hear the pump come on when you turn the key to "start it"? If you can, check fuses 1st too....

Ive never been able to hear the fuel pump since I put it in. But it ran great up to now. I thought about fuses but wasnt sure.

Well, check them to make sure.. Worse case, you need to replace the fuel pump again - try not to use cheap ones in it, because they don't last long. Also, SOMETIMES there's a little tube that comes loose on the fuel pump in the tank and or get eaten by the gas.

Jason, don't just replace your fuel pump. always check fuses and relays when you have a problem with your vehicle. also, you may want to have the fuel pressure tested. there will be a pressure spec for your vehicle and if the pressure isn't within the specs listed, the truck wont run. also, a quic check , yuou can spray some carb cleaner into the air intake and see if it fires. if it does then that is a pretty good indicator that your fuel pump isn't working. if it doesn't fire, then yu have to check for spark

something else occurred to me Jason, since that is a ford, there is likely an inertia switch under the dash somewhere. sometimes near the hump, sometimes over by the passenger side kick panel. it is a safety device that shuts power off to the fuel pump in the event of an accident. the switch can even pop if you hit a hard bump sometimes. any way, it has a reset button on it. google its location for your vehicle and check it out. Mike.

If it fires up on the other tank then the answer is not the fuel pump. If you just added some fuel I would first suspect the quality of the fuel. I would check the fuel filter first. Check to see if an individual filter has been installed on each tank. Next check the filter in the tank. Last, (because it is the most expensive) check the solenoid which diverts the flow of fuel from each tank.
