Why is my 02 camry codes doing this

Asked by Anita Nov 28, 2023 at 09:41 PM about the 2002 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My o2 camry is throwing codes p0500
p1725 p1730. While driving the
speedometer will drop to 0 and the rpms
will rev to between 3,00/4,000. It feels
like the transmission is going into
neutral. The ATF levels are good. I have
replaced the input and output speed
sensors and the 02 sensor. I don't know
what else to change except I have a
vacuum switching valve that needs to be
replaced. Can you give me any clues as
to what is going on

P0500 is a VSS code so that would explain speedometer, the P1725 is a input turbine speed sensor code so the computer can determine shift points, the P1730 code is also a transmission code for the counter gear sensor to compare it's speed with the direct clutch speed. I would recommend that a good transmission shop check it out as you could have sensor wiring issues or an transmission internal slipping problems and might need transmission overhaul.

If the computer isn't getting the proper signal from the Speed Sensor, it won't be able to adjust the transmission speeds. Just a defect in the VSS can cause all those problems, and more. When the speedometer drops to zero, the engine speed changes are just the computer hunting for a gear to shift into. Just change the VSS, a really easy job, and see if that cures all else.

I had the same issues with my 98 Camry, Did not drive it for a few weeks, afraid I would get stuck in traffic, or destroy the transmission. Took me weeks to find the fix, this info MIGHT be your issue, hope this helps, watch BOTH you-tube videos for the saving info. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcVhAsNL6mo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uYo1dfHK_s
