2000 Outback engine swap

Asked by DC37 Feb 24, 2019 at 06:06 PM about the 2000 Subaru Outback Base Wagon

Question type: General

Hi, I have a 2000 Subaru outback with the 2.5 and I'm wondering what the best
engine would be to swap for better mpg would be? Will the 2018 impreza
engine getting 30ish mpg work? I'd like to get better mileage and i'd like to no
longer deal with the known head gasket issues of that generation?

That would be a very difficult swap I would use the same type engine you have now or I would scrap the car as it is probably not worth fixing.

i'd rather not scrap it. from my initial research it looks like a replacement engine and replacement trans would be somewhere between 3k and 6k. Does that sound right to you? and would have any recommendations for places to order from? I just figure a proven reliable car with new engine and trans for 6k or less is better than buying another used car for probably more money..?

Your choices are a used engine just like yours, rebuild the one you have or buy a crate engine. What you choose depends on your budget. 3 to 6 grand should get you a good used engine/transmission installed but not a rebuilt drive train.

My choice would be to put that 6 grand down on a new or lightly used car.
