The 2 catalytic converters (both on same pipe) on my 2001 Subaru Legacy L were hanging down from one end, scraping pavement. I drove it to shop (1 mile). Shop said pipe broke and I need new converters. I asked if they could just hang converters and pipe back up? Shop said converters were too beat up from scraping on ground. I had family in hospital and no time so I took the shop's word for it, cost of $1,085. Got the old parts back. The converters were not beat up, dented or anything. A mechanic friend said they looked fine (he doesn't work on Subarus but was sure they were fine. Pipe was broken in short area between one converter and the flange that holds it to car. Could shop have welded that?

Probably. The original design includes a double-flanged flex-joint with a compressible wire mesh gasket. Rebuilding that mess is a PITA, so some guys forego the spring-bolt-donut parts and just use a simple double-gasket. I suppose if either or both of your flanges are shot you can have a patch-pipe welded in for under $100. Problem is that lifespan may be short as there's no remaining flex in the system. But given your Subie's age I'd give it a shot.

Thanks so much for this information. This is very helpful. I can use this. I may insert a photo of the parts I talked about.
