95,000 mi replace the tranny or not

Asked by Sue Feb 22, 2016 at 10:42 PM about the 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix 4 Dr SE Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Help! I bought my 16 yr this car with 90,000 miles 9
months for 2,000.  Now it is slipping in 2 nd gear. It
has been a good car til now, and just put 500.00 if
tires on the car early winter. Some rust at bottom.
Do I replace the tranny or sell as is and save for
another newer car for my son.
Thank-you, Sue

First change your transmission fluid. Go to an empty parking lot and test drive it. If it still slips, it may be a bad gear or clutch. Nothing is more frustrating than a transmission problem. Best to have a reputable shop look at it. Do NOT go to ScAAMCO (AAMCO).

You really want to keep this car?? If so, have a complete transmission rebuild. And, get the engine checked out before you do it. Unless the engine is perfect, rebuilding the transmission is a fool's errand.

Sue, if you like the car and nothing else is wrong with it (perhaps get it looked over by a mechanic) then consider having the transmission rebuilt. With a good engine, new tires and a rebuilt transmission you should get some good use out of it.
