how do i know when fuel pressure regulator needs replaced

how do I know about when the fuel pressure regulator needs to be replaced?are there warning signs or just something to look for?

when mine went out the car wouldn't idle and fuel was coming through the vacuum line going to the back of the throttle body, it would run off idle but wouldn't idle.
