I have a 2004 Pontiac Grand AM and the ignition switch has to be replaced along with the key lock cylinder, so my question is do i have to replace the steering wheel column as well?

you shouldn't have to, these should be replaceable parts. get yourself a Haynes manual it should give step by step.
